Search Engines Especially for Kids

Several very good search engines are available for kids of all ages. They are filtered and touted to be safe from pornography and suggestive advertising. The ones we list are chosen for entertainment and enlightenment. Bookmark the ones you like best, and use more than one when searching. We have also listed specialized search engines that you may not find on your own, like ALA Great Websites for Kids (from the American Library Association) and FirstGov for Kids. These collections are generally hand-picked for their information and appropriateness for children. They may not have the high visibility of KidsClick! or Yahooligans—but we encourage you to use them.

Major Kids' Search Engines

 KidsClick!

 http: / /www. kidsclick. org/

KidsClick lists about 5,000 Web sites in various categories. Librarians back  these sites, and they are maintained by Colorado State Library. A click will take the student to the library version, arranged by Dewey Decimal number. Though it is a small collection, we usually start our search here because of the quality of the selections.

 Yahooligans

http: / / www.yahooligans. com/

Yahoo for kids, designed for ages 7 to 12. Sites are hand-picked to be ap propriate for children. Yahooligans is the oldest major directory for children, launched in March 1996. It is arranged by subject headings and subheadings just like its grownup version.

  Ask Jeeves For Kids

 http://www.ajkids.com/

Ask Jeeves For Kids has been vetted for appropriateness. Sometimes the  results are good. It may be best for more experienced searchers.

  Looksmart's Kids Directory

  http://search.netnanny.com/

The Kids Directory is a listing of more than 20,000 kid Web sites that were  hand-picked by employees of Looksmart subsidiary Net Nanny and vetted for qual ity. Arranged by broad subject, this is a friendly Web site for the young. Family-safe.
