Toshiba Satellite P840T-1007X Review

Toshiba Satellite P840T-1007X
Reliable Performer

With the launch of Microsoft’s Windows 8  operating system, almost every computer manufacturer in the world is going the distance, pushing the new operating system towards consumers
by creating notebooks and Ultrabooks with touch enabled screens to complement the OS. Toshiba has gotten into the fray as well, equipping all their Satellite notebooks with the new operating
system and touch screens. One such Satellite notebook is the
P840T-1007X (otherwise known  simply as the P840T). What do we  think about it? Keep reading to
find out.  The P840T comes with a sturdy and solid design. It isn’t garish or exceedingly loud and
bright, nor does it have any sort of exaggerated markings on it. In fact, it sports a very simple and
easy-to-use design. It’s equipped with an optical drive, coupled with HDMI and VGA ports as well. You’ll find USB3.0 ports on both sides of the notebook with no presence of any USB2.0 ports; a clear sign that Toshiba has completely transitioned to the latest and fastest USB standard in the market.
On the inside, the P840T runs on an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7 processor as well as 4GB of
DDR3L 1600MHz RAM. The touch screen equipped on it is a 10point multi-touch display,
which in turn works hand in hand with the Windows 8 operating system quite well, running smoothly
without any hiccups or stutters when transitioning from screen to screen. Physical attributes out of
the way, let’s move on to the performance side of the P840T. One of the first things that we  test with all laptops is the battery  life. The P840T clocked out at 2 hours and 5 minutes, which is
about average for a non-Ultrabook model; once you’ve factored it the discreet NVIDIA graphics card
that’s been fitted into the device. Above and beyond the Powermark tests, we subjected the P840T to
our list of synthetic benchmark tests in the form of PCMark7, PCMark05 and PCMark Vantage.
The scores which were achieved by our review unit were 2665, 7382 and 4922, respectively.
Because this device is fitted with a discreet graphics card from NVIDIA, we decided to run it through 3DMark11 as well. The result of which was a score of 1087, which means that you’ll be able to run the games you like from a year or two ago, but the P840T will show its limitations on the more graphics and resource hungry interactive video games on the market at the moment.
Overall, the P840T is a solid piece of equipment from Toshiba with all the Windows 8-related bells and whistles that you could ask for. While it may not be the most powerful notebook in the Toshiba Satellite range,  it is definitely a laptop which is  designed to cater to the casual user who isn’t too demanding. For those of you looking for a notebook which is simple in design and reliable to boot, then this notebook might just be the one for you.

It may not be a powerhouse, but the P840T
can still perform
